Epigenetics in Health

The study of Epigenetics can help many people better understand the health conditions and genetic disease they carry. The Epigenome affects which genes are expressed and may or may not cause the environmental factors you live in to affect you (Citation- "The Epigenetics of Identical Twins") . Even if they do not affect you physically, these environmental factors may still affect what genes are expressed in those that you pass on to your child. For example- If the water supply for say the San Fransisco area was contaminated with Mercury or another common element in the past, it may not affect anyone at that moment, but may affect those people's children due to the fact that it affected their DNA.

Title:" Unsilencing the Good Genes: Gene Silencing in Cancer"

Summary: In this video, you will learn how the epigenome can silence the "good genes " in a cell to cause a cell to uncontrolablly divide, thus creating a tumor and leaving a person with the diagnosis of cancer. (Citation- "Unsilencing the Good Genes")

Title: "The Epigenetics of Identical Twins"

Summary: In this video you will learn how identical twins DNA is formed with each epigenome and how the enviroment (i.e. food, activity, climate) has an effect on how the gene is expressed due to the epigenome. (Citation- "The Epigenetics of Identical Twins")

How Else Can Epigentics Being used in Health?

  • Regenerative Medicine- The epigenome could provide the key to deriving safe tissue that is grown from the patients own cells. (Citation-9)

  • Genetic Disorders- Epigenetics could be a gateway into being able to control how a gene is expressed, maybe leading to a way to fix genetic mutations. (Citation-9)
